What is Glaucoma?Glaucoma is a term which is used to describe a group of disorders of the eye in which there is characteristic damage to the optic nerve, which transmits signals of vision to the brain and is usually but not always associated with raised pressure inside the eye. If left untreated Glaucoma can lead to total and irreversible blindness.
Glaucoma usually occurs due to raised pressure in the eye which builds up because the fluid forming in the eye does not drain out properly and keeps collecting in the eye. This raised pressure is the prime cause among others to damage the optic nerve which is important to transmit visual signals to the brain.

Is there any association between glaucoma and decreased vision? Glaucoma initially affects the peripheral or side vision. As the disease progresses, patients may gradually lose central vision as well. In the absence of any treatment, total blindness may occur. Hence the treatment should be started immediately and continued lifelong.
If you have been diagnosed with early glaucoma, you need to follow the treatment instructions given to you by our physician and you can lead a normal life. If the disease is diagnosed in the late stage, you might have to make a few changes in your lifestyle, such as avoiding driving and certain sporting activities, especially during the night-time, as they can become more challenging. Take your medications at the same time every day, making it a part of your daily routine. Seek a support group to express your feelings and issues with individuals who face the same challenges.
If not treated, glaucoma may gradually progress to total vision loss. Vision impairment initially manifests as loss of peripheral or side vision that deteriorates to tunnel vision and, eventually to total blindness.
